TMF Yearmix 2008

Every year, on the 31st of December, the TMF (The Music Factory) channel from Holland launches it’s yearmix, featuring the past year’s best tracks, all mixed into one 60 minute compilation. The TMF Yearmix is the one of the most awaited mixes of the year, ans is usually a major success. This year however… it fails to rise up to the expectations.

Ranked 4806th in the world, but popular in Holland, the year DJ Chuckie had the honors of making the Yearmix for TMF. It is not known weather it was the network’s or DJ Chuckies decision, but the video is filled with frames advertising Chuckie’s name, which in previous mixes did not occur. Basically in previous mixed not WHO mixed it was important but HOW it mixed it, a point which in this year’s mix was totally omitted.

The cross fades (if you can call them that) are a basic a stop-deck-A, play-deck-B  or in some more “evolved” fades a loop-deck-A, play-deck-B, stop-deck-A. DJ Chuckie just fails to mix the tracks one into the other like in previous mixes, which is what the beauty of the TMF yearmixes were.

The classical (good) TMF mix usually starts out slow, playing the year’s most popular tracks, which didn’t really had a pop beat, and then picks up the pace and the beast. However, due to the fact that this year’s tracks are played in a totally random order, this never happens in this mix.

Also, where available, the TMF yearmix usually uses a remix of a given track instead of the original, something which also does not happen this year. The example which should be noted is Britney Spears’ Piece of me, which although has a great remix by DJ Tiesto, Chuckie insists on playing the original version.

Also to be noted, that the TMF yearmix is not made, played and aired live, so there is room for correction, and therefor it is beyond my understanding how, for example, the crossfade between Enrique Iglesias – Can you hear me and Lady Gaga – Just dance were never remade. It is just plain awful.
